AAP set to launch Punjab blitzkrieg for big poll battle. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will on Thursday launch a reach-out blitzkrieg in Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections slated for some 18 months from now. The party, which wants to replicate its sweeping victory in Delhi in Punjab this February, is aiming to gather 25 lakh members, hold about 40 rallies, and set up 30,000 publicity canopies. The initial burst under the “Punjab Jodo” campaign will conclude in 10 days, while the rest of the activities will go on till October 9 when the party plans to hold a big demonstration. Sangrur MP Bhagwant Singh Mann, who is considered close to Arvind Kejriwal, is the only AAP leader who has not embarrassed the party so far in the state. AAP sees itself in a direct fight with the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine, trying to capitalise on what it terms an anti-incumbency wave. The party does not see a challenger in the Congress which it says is a divided house.
But AAP’s own house is also not in perfect shape. All four of AAP’s Lok Sabha candidates who won in the 2014 elections come from Punjab, and the party managed about a 25% vote share in the state. But Patiala MP Dr Dharamvir Gandhi has risen in revolt against party chief Arvind Kejriwal, branding the Delhi CM a dictator and equating AAP with “Mayawati’s and Mulayam Singh Yadav’s parties”. Fatehgarh MP Harinder Singh Khalsa and Faridkot MP Prof Sadhu Singh want Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, who were thrown out for questioning Kejriwal’s style of functioning, back in the party.
